Große Fuge

The Rothko String Quartet presents a danced concert together with the dancer and choreographer Tian Gao, who is a member of the legendary company Sasha Waltz and Guests. At the centre is Ludwig van Beethoven’s grandiose “Great Fugue”, which overtaxed Beethoven’s contemporaries, but for Igor Stravinsky is the “most perfect miracle of music” and “contemporary forever”. The performance, which fuses music and dance, is a touching meditation on time, transience and the escape from it. The musical dramaturgy sets Beethoven’s mysterious work in relation to baroque and contemporary perspectives and draws a bold arc across four centuries of music.
