A vibrant exploration of transformation, ritual and sound poetry can be experienced in the revival of the performance “Baum”, featuring the original cast. The Spanish-German composer Maria de Alvear created it 25 years ago in collaboration with the percussion ensemble Drums of Chaos and the singer Cora Schmeiser. Through the interplay of voice and drums, “Baum” explores the essence of the tree in eight “soundscapes”. The composer abstracts the customs of indigenous peoples and transposes them into her own artistic cosmos. Hypnotic rhythmic patterns develop from minimalistically reduced seeds. Singer Cora Schmeiser describes the work as a “deeply moving, archaic soundscape”.
