Useful information
about the performance
Arnold Schoenberg’s poignant string sextet *Verklärte Nacht* was composed in 1899, on the cusp of the 20th century, and marks a high point in late Romantic music. At the same time, this deeply emotional work is regarded as the final swan song of an era. The musicians of Ensemble Reflektor and Liam Byrne on the viola da gamba combine Schoenberg with late English consort music, which is itself regarded as an echo of a bygone artistic era. For it is an expression of adherence to an ancient compositional tradition, whilst the early Baroque was already taking root in continental Europe. Across the centuries, these late sounds are united by the allure of the tipping point and the uncertainties of times of change.
