Useful information
about the performance

The band DakhaBrakha from Kiev self-ironically describes their special world music project as “ethno-chaos”. The Ukrainian quartet experiments in a surprising way with old folk song motifs from Ukraine, Eastern Europe and Western Asia and blithely incorporates sounds and rhythms from rock and pop into their songs, which are sung in many languages. The name of the band, founded by Vladyslav Troitskiy, the director of the avant-garde theatre Dakh, goes back to the Ukrainian words for give and take. Their unmistakable songs fascinate with a minimalist, modern and at the same time archaic, even sacral sound that immediately gets under your skin. And the traditionally dressed, mostly female troupe presents it with power, humour and melancholy.

Expert tip

Marko Halanevych, DakhaBrakha

"It is a great tragedy for our country and we feel it every moment. Many people in Ukraine and around the world tell us that our best way to be useful and helpful is to be on stage and show people our culture and music and tell our story and that of our country."
