Useful information
about the performance
We are presenting a groundbreaking classic to mark the opening: Mourad Merzouki and the Käfig company are bringing the legendary production “Pixel” back to the Düsseldorf Festival, a show that has been thrilling audiences around the world since its world premiere in 2014. Merzouki’s fast-paced blend of urban dance and contemporary dance is inspired by street hip-hop culture. “Pixel” unfolds within the three-dimensional virtual landscape of an interactive video installation by digital artists Adrien Mondot and Claire Bardainne: as in a nightmare, giant waves surge upwards; the dancers contort rising streams of pixels with acrobatic resistance and dance dreamily amidst the clouds. Absurd, spectacular and poetic.
Mourad Merzouki: “The ‘Pixel’ project came about when I first met Adrien Mondot and Claire Bardainne. It was as if I were unable to distinguish between the real and the virtual world… . With curiosity and an open mind, I approach this new adventure into an incomprehensible world created by light projection.”
And the Jerusalem Post writes: “The choreographer is a master of fusion. No one has managed to marry the screen and the moving body so perfectly.”

"Pixel might be Mourad Merzouki’s masterpiece. The famous choreographer, who comes from the circus and hip-hop arts, has imagined a tremendous show where dance and digital arts are poetically answering each other."
