about the performance
The American composer Julius Eastman was a radical exponent of post-minimalism. His impassioned body of work would have been almost entirely forgotten following a dramatic descent into destitution and his untimely death. 10 Celli, led by Jakob Nierenz, now place Eastman’s monumental work ‘The Holy Presence of Joan d’Arc’ at the centre of their concert, flanked by works by Kaija Saariaho, Claudio Monteverdi and Florence Price. As a Black, gay artist, Eastman boldly addressed the theme of oppression, which he himself had experienced. In this genre-defying work, his Joan d’Arc becomes an icon of self-liberation.
