about the performance
The American composer Julius Eastman was a radical exponent of post-minimalism. Following a dramatic descent into poverty and his untimely death, his impassioned work was on the verge of being almost entirely forgotten. 10 Cellium Jakob Nierenz now place Eastman’s monumental work ‘The Holy Presence of Joan d’Arc’ at the centre of their concert, accompanied by works by Kaija Saariaho, Claudio Monteverdi, Florence Price and texts by Bertolt Brecht from his ‘Saint Joan of the Stockyards’. As a black, gay artist, Eastman provocatively addressed the theme of oppression, which he himself experienced. In his genre-defying work, his Joan d’Arc becomes an icon of self-liberation.
