Useful information
about the performance

This formidable duo with a penchant for improvisation is also a regular guest at the festival: after the acclaimed programmes “Psycho”, “Life”, “Krankenakte Robert Schumann” and “Blackbird”, the new evening by Matthias Brandt and Jens Thomas presents “Die Bergwerke zu Falun”, a word-music collage from the elixirs of E.T.A. Hoffmann. The literary outsider stands for a type of romanticism that favours the “night side” of humanity. The story is based on a true incident: in Falun, Sweden, a miner disappeared in 1677 shortly before his wedding. His body, perfectly preserved by vitriol, was not found until 1719 and was only recognised by his aged bride, who had remained unmarried. The musical-performative dream team Matthias Brandt & Jens Thomas guarantee an emotional rollercoaster ride.

While Matthias Brandt breathes life into this story, which incidentally is based on a true story and inspired other Romantic authors as well as E.T.A. Hoffmann, with his characteristic calm, Jens Thomas runs riot on the keys, creating the film music for the cinema of the mind inspired by Brandt. However, he never drowns out the text, never lets the madness completely off the leash and sets one brilliant accent after another.
