What does climate change sound like? Its consequences come along dangerously quietly. But its triggers are deafeningly loud. The globalization suite “Fuel” by American composer Julia Wolfe is an examination of the immense dynamics of global trade. Against the soundscape of a major port, the business of landing, unloading and transportation is transformed into noisy sounds for string instruments. Ship horns, engines, hammers, drills, the rhythm of booming gear shafts and the crashing of closing loading flaps mingle with the spectacle. Julia Wolfe is on the trail of the catastrophes of the fossil age and transforms the threat into apocalyptic machine music.
