Harpsichordist Elina Albach and her ensemble CONTINUUM are widely known for their reduction to a new essentiality of baroque works. Their arrangements of central works for small ensembles are by no means “light” variants of the originals. Now Albach dares to do something new, but in the old spirit of discovery: In her search for identity- and community-creating rituals she came across Claudio Monteverdi’s epochal Marian Vespers, a sacred work more than 400 years old. Albach confronts this milestone of music history, reduced to seven singers and nine instrumentalists, with the contemporary cycle “Vespers for a New Dark Age”, a piece by Missy Mazzoli revolving around rituals from today. Goosebumps and illuminating insights are to be expected.
