Our society pushes death to the margins – into nursing homes, hospices and hospitals. The fact that death can be expensive for those left behind is also deliberately ignored. Errollyn Wallen takes up this delicate subject with five songs for soprano and string quartet under the prosaic title “Are you worried about the rising cost of funerals?”. On this concert evening, they collide with the most famous requiem mass of all, Mozart’s sombre “Requiem”. Errollyn Wallen, on the other hand, sings a soulful blues in the very first song. Isabel Pfefferkorn and the Rothko String Quartet draw attention to what remains for the bereaved between grief and bills: the search for consolation and the hope of a new beginning.
