about the performance
This year marks the 200th anniversary of Anton Bruckner’s birth. Reason enough to present the great symphonist’s vocal works. Nikolaus Harnoncourt once described his compatriot as a “music-historical meteorite”; his late motets are among the finest that the late Romantic composer created, as his symphonic power and spiritual depth seem to be condensed into a very small space. The Düsseldorf chamber choir ars cantandi under the direction of Markus Belmann searches for Bruckner’s musical ancestors. With the specialists for medieval music, Norbert Rodenkirchen and Stefanie Brijoux, the programme combines the late motets with Gregorian chant and works by Hildegard von Bingen.
