Useful information
about the performance
The “Messiah” is a special case in George Frederic Handel’s oeuvre, as the monumental oratorio does not tell a story, but thematizes the Christian history of salvation. Profound, rather abstract and yet immensely popular. The triumphant “Hallelujah” chorus is even one of the most famous pieces of music ever, and people still rise from their seats in England to this day. It is hard to believe that Handel is said to have composed the “Messiah” in just under four weeks in 1741. Although he also recycled music from his earlier cantatas, the work appears flawless and as if it has been cast from a single mould. The choir and orchestra of St Andrew’s Church under the direction of Martin Fratz will once again take on the challenges of this stroke of genius.
